Give compelling reasons for a unified I- and D-caches at deeper levels of the cache hierarchy.
What will be an ideal response?
The purpose of deeper levels in the caches is to increase the hit rate up until the point where the memory needs to be accessed. Unifying the I- and D-caches lead to more hits due to their bigger size. Also there are times in a program where the D-cache would be required much more in place of the I-cache. This would allow the whole cache to be able to allocate more space for use as a D-cache, while with separate caches there is no way to switch between the two.
