Covenant marriages are a response to the rising divorce rate in the United States as a result of no-fault divorce. There are several requirements that couples who want to marry must follow before they can marry in these jurisdictions. Louis and Carrie live in one of those jurisdictions. In order to comply, what are they agreeing to do?

What will be an ideal response?

Before marriage, parties must go to premarital counseling. They must also sign a statement of intent and recite a declaration, and provide proof of their participation in a premarital course. If Louis and Carrie wish to end their marriage, they could do so by proving the fault grounds of adultery, imprisonment for a felony, abandoning the marital home for a period of at least one year, or physically or sexually abusing a family member. If such fault grounds are not available, the parties may be divorced if they lived separate and apart for a specific period of time. There is a provision in the law that allows couples who are already married to convert to a covenant marriage.
