Explain the reasons why a patient may receive a TPN
What will be an ideal response?
Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) provides a patient with severe gastrointestinal distress and/or poor nutrient absorption with needed daily nutritional requirements. TPNs are given to patients who cannot or should not receive their nutrition through the gastrointestinal tract and are prescribed by a physician to meet that patient's entire nutritional needs. TPNs nourish the body and relieve the digestive tract while therapy for the underlying condition progresses. TPN is indicated in patients with the following conditions: cancer, AIDS, Crohn's disease, surgical removal of the intestines, severe diarrhea, hyperemesis gravidarum, premature neonate, and coma.
