Discuss the influence of struggling adult children on their parents' well-being.
What will be an ideal response?
Children's success in life influences their midlife parents' sense of well-being. Both mothers and fathers show negative emotional responses to their adult children's unmet career and relationships goals. Adult children's problems are associated with low parental well-being, including more negative than positive affect, low levels of self-esteem and poor parent-child relationships. Research shows that having an adult child with problems predicted poor parental well-being, regardless of the presence of another successful child, and the more problems in the family, the worse parental well-being. Parents who perceive their grown children as needing too much support report lower life satisfaction.
