Briefly explain Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP)

What will be an ideal response?

Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a data service that is used to carry voice communications. VoIP promises to provide voice-level services at a significant cost savings. Traditional voice communications use time-division multiplexing (TDM) with Private Branch Exchange (PBX) hardware. A PBX functions like a physically isolated network through which all enterprise voice communications pass. PBX offers a high level of security. VoIP allows voice and data to be transported over the same networking infrastructure, which is a strong advantage. An organization considering VoIP needs to know its current, and future, voice bandwidth requirements.
