Explain what resistance factor is in structural design.
What will be an ideal response?
Resistance factor is the second safety factor used in the design of structures. We calculate the strength (also called load resistance) of a structure by analytical procedures and then reduce the calculated strength by multiplying it with a factor < 1.0. This takes into account the uncertainty in calculating the strength of the structure.
