Why is the traffic function important in patrol work, and how can it bring about bad citizen-police relations?

What will be an ideal response?

The traffic function is important to patrol work because it focuses on reducing traffic deaths and injuries through the enforcement of traffic laws. It also provides administrators with easily verifiable evidence that their officers are working.

However, because for many citizens traffic enforcement may be their only contact with the police, the officer’s attitude and demeanor may have long-term effects and long-term significance for community policing. Negative public relations resulting from the police traffic function may impact funding and other issues vital to the police department’s ability to perform.
