A particularly robust and powerful application of feedback control is six sigma. Six sigma is designed to reduce defects in all organization processes-not just product defects but anything that may cause customer dissatisfaction. Six-sigma companies have close to zero defects plus substantially lower production costs and cycle times, leading to much higher customer satisfaction. The six-sigma approach begins by defining the outputs and information that flow through each stage of the process and then measuring performance at each stage. Tools for analyzing results include looking for the root causes of problems. Six sigma does not automatically and always deliver better business results. It focuses only on how to eliminate defects in a process, not whether the process is the best one for the bottom line.
