What are the goals of narrative therapy?

What will be an ideal response?

An important goal of narrative therapy is to help clients realize what forces are influencing their lives and focus on the positive aspects of the story. When clients analyze their lives as a story, they begin to understand the different forces and roles that are influencing their behavior. This recognition gives clients the flexibility to make the necessary changes in their lives. Clients learn that the meaning that they attach to the events of their lives can change. Once clients learn that they are the authors of meaning in their lives, they also come to understand that they can reauthor meanings for lived experiences.

What are their language preferences? With immigrant families, the younger generations often prefer to speak in English while the parents tend to be more comfortable in Spanish. One key assessment issue involves exploring the family and extended family resources available to the family members. Where are potential sources of support? Is the family relatively isolated?
