Ellis believed that stress and problems in human life usually stem from irrational beliefs concerning
many topics. Similarly, he believed that people experience emotional disturbances in relation to love,
romance, and sexuality because of irrational beliefs that tackle these topics. Moreover, culture supports
the emergence of some of these beliefs; for example, sex without love is considered unethical, and
people who choose to indulge in it may experience shame, guilt, or decreased feelings of self-worth. Or
in the case of the dissolution of relationships, it is expected that one feel grieved and depressed, and it is
considered wrong to date and enter a new relationship until this prolonged mourning.
