Why is the crime fighter image possibly the greatest obstacle in accepting a realistic view of the police role?

What will be an ideal response?

The crime fighter image is an obstacle to understanding the police because most people believe that the police role is limited to law enforcement, including both the prevention and detection of crime and the apprehension of criminals. However, this is not what police really do on a daily basis and results in a very inaccurate view of contemporary policing. This image is harmful to the public because it results in unrealistic expectations about the ability of the police to actually catch criminals. The image also harms individual officers because they may believe that rewards and promotions are tied only to success in capturing criminals. Finally, police recruits may enter policing because they believe the job to be what is depicted on television and in the movies, only to discover later that much of their time is spent on more boring and mundane tasks.
