• Engel studied the supervision styles of police sergeants and found four styles most typically in use. The traditional supervisor is one who expects to see measurable outcomes, such as written reports, citations and tickets. The innovative supervisor encourages officers to be less concerned with outcomes and more concerned with problem solving. The supportive supervisor offers support to officers in the performance of their jobs. Finally, the active supervisor spends a majority of their time working with officers in the field.
• These styles can be found thorough out many different police agencies and researchers have not selected a style that is the most efficient, as that may depend upon agency resources. However, researchers have concluded that effective supervision takes places in criminal justice agencies exhibit certain skills.
• Research has demonstrated that supervisors who exhibit, technical skills, human skills and conceptual skills tend to be the most effective within their organization. Technical skills refer to specialized knowledge or expertise within their service area. Human skills are those needed to work with and motivate people. And conceptual skills provide a supervisor with the ability to analyze and diagnose complex situations.
