Explain how flow hoods contribute to infection control, identify the two main types of flow hoods, and describe their airflow patterns

What will be an ideal response?

Flow hoods provide a controlled environment in which levels of particulates, microbes, and contaminants of all kinds are regulated and kept to a minimum by constant air filtration. The hood creates a particle-free working environment by taking in air through a filtration system and exhausting it across a work surface in a laminar or unidirectional airstream. The filtration system typically consists of a prefilter and a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter.
There are two main types of airflow hoods: the horizontal laminar airflow workbench (LAFW) and the vertical airflow hood, or biological safety cabinet (BSC). The airflow in the LAFW flows horizontally from the back of the hood toward the front of the hood, whereas the airflow in the BSC flows vertically downward from the top of the hood toward the work surface. Each hood is designed to sterilize through filtration using a HEPA filter.
