Describe the process by which a fire service applicant becomes a full-duty fire professional.
Applicants must pass a written exam, oral interview, physical agility test, medical evaluation, and a criminal background investigation. Applicants who score highest of the written examination are ranked at the top of the candidate list. New firefighters work under close supervision learning the department's policies and procedures. The new firefighter is placed in a probationary status for periods ranging from 6 months to one year, depending on the department's policy. If the probationary period is successfully completed, the probation status is lifted to full-duty fire professional.
