What role does content knowledge play in developing reading and writing skills in the content area?
What will be an ideal response?
Content knowledge plays a critical role. Students learn new concepts in terms of what they already know. The more they know about a topic, the easier it is for them to learn additional information. Strategies can help. Strategies allow students to learn more and so build background knowledge. In addition, strategies are easier to use if students have background knowledge. It is easier to make inferences or draw conclusions when the content is understood.
