What is the difference between compellence and deterrence? Give an example of each.

What will be an ideal response?

deterrence as using threats to prevent a target state from doing something you think they would otherwise do and compellence as using threats in order to force a state to do something you think they would not otherwise do. Assured destruction is one example of deterrence. The Bush administration tried compellence with Saddam Hussein over Kuwait.
