Ans: Answers to this question will vary but should include elements of the following: ESL pull-out programs place ESL students to learn in a regular classroom but leave for a short period each day or week to receive specialized ESL instruction or tutoring. They may go by themselves or with a small group of ESL students. Their ESL teacher may support what is being taught in class or teach special lessons. ESL pull-out programs are common in school districts with a small number of ESL students or with few specialized ESL teachers. ESL as a class period is an arrangement is common in schools where students rotate classes. ESL students attend an ESL class, which may be an elective class or serve as their language arts course. Sheltered English (or content-based English instruction) is much like bilingual education, subject-matter teachers or grade-level teachers teach the standard class or curriculum, which is modified to accommodate ESL students. All the students in the class are ESL students. The teacher teaches all subjects in English according to the theory that while teaching a subject, the teacher also teaches English. Language is simplified, and there is much use of visual aids and hands-on activities. And, finally, in bilingual education ELLs all speak the same native language, and the teacher speaks both the native language and English.
