Most of Japan (85%) is forested mountains, leaving only a relatively small area on the coastal plains for settlement. Because this land area is so small, virtually every human activity is tightly packed into it. These activities or different types of landuse include homes and apartments, farms, factories, recreation, and everything else you can imagine.
