Describe the nature of, and means of dealing with Internet crimes
What will be an ideal response?
Internet crimes compel the development of new investigative techniques, specialized and ongoing training for police investigators, and the employment of individuals with strong technical backgrounds (and an ability to "follow the money"). The police must become better educated, better equipped, and more adaptable. Social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook are also becoming one of the most dangerous places on the Internet. Scammers break into accounts posing as friends of users, sending spam that directs them to websites that steal personal information and spread viruses. Since Facebook alone now has more than 500 million active members (70 percent of whom are outside the United States), the problem is extremely serious. But such sites are also yielding character evidence to detectives and police who find damaging Internet photos of defendants to use against them.
