Define role strain and role conflict. Give an example of role strain that you might experience as a college student and an example of role conflict that you have experienced
What will be an ideal response?
Role strain is conflict that someone feels within a role. Role conflict is a conflict that someone feels between roles because the expectations attached to one role are incompatible with the expectations of another role. The examples provided by the students will be varied. Role strain as a college student may involve the difficulty in choosing to do well academically even though one's peers are poor students. Role conflict will take into account other statuses that the student occupies and the sense of being unable to fulfill them all. An example of this would be a student who wants to study for a major exam, visit his ill mother in the hospital, and respond to a fire call as a volunteer firefighter because of a major blaze, with all three situations occurring in the same general timeframe.
