Answer: Operon and protein fusions are both examples of gene fusions that bring together two separate nucleotide sequences. A gene fusion is formed when one of the genes' promoter regions is fused to the coding region of the other gene upstream of it. Protein fusions have transcription occur at the same site for the two fused genes, and translation of the fused transcript takes place at one site. An operon fusion retains separate translational start sites despite sharing the same transcriptional start site.
