India existed as a single country until the end of British colonialism in 1947. At that time, the dominant Muslim populations in the east and northwest regions decided that they did not want to live in a country dominated by Hindus. The British divided India into two countries. Hindu India covered most of the subcontinent, while Muslim Pakistan had two non-contiguous parts (Bangladesh gained independence from Pakistan in 1971). The resulting population dislocation and internecine religious violence caused countless deaths and remains a source of tension
between India and her neighbors to present day.
