Compare the pro-life and pro-choice ethical positions on abortion with a description of the justifications supporting each position.
What will be an ideal response?
The underlying principle of the pro-life position is that all life is a gift from God that human beings are not permitted to take. They believe that human life begins at the moment of conception and that the fetus is, from that beginning, entitled to full rights and protection. The leadership for the pro-life movement comes from the Roman Catholic Church for which putting an end to abortion is a major policy goal.
The pro-choice position takes at least two forms: absolute and modified. The absolute position argues that pregnancy is solely the concern of a woman and that she should have the absolute right to control her own body and determine whether to carry a fetus to term. Ethically, this position is based on the conviction that the individual must be free and autonomous in all personal decisions. The modified pro-choice activists affirm that human life is good and ought to be preserved but also argue that the quality of life is important. They argue that an unborn child may have a right to life, but ask if the child does not also have the right to be wanted and cared for.
