Briefly explain how the global positioning system is used to determine position.
What will be an ideal response?
The global positioning system (GPS) has a space segment, control segment, and user segment that come together to provide positional data. The space segment consists of the satellites broadcasting signals at the speed of light. The control segment is composed of several ground stations located around the world that monitor the positions and health of the satellites. Base stations measure signals that are developed into orbital models for each satellite. Orbital models compute exact orbital data and clock corrections. The master control station uploads the orbital and clock data to the satellites. The satellites then send the necessary orbital data to the user segment over radio signals. The user segment consists of the GPS receivers and antennas that receive the satellite signals. Using a principle from algebra, a GPS receiver calculates the distance between itself and a given satellite by determining the amount of time a signal travels from satellite to receiver. The receiver measures the travel time from four satellites to the receiver to precisely determine position using trilateration.
