In art class, children need to generalize skills such as drawing shapes, across varied media (pastels, paints; paper, ceramics). At the same time they need to discriminate, for example, using a forceful stroke with crayon, and a lighter touch with felt-tips.
Students may be less apt than the teacher assumes, when expected to transfer skills from one set of materials to another. Generalization would be facilitated by, for example, exposing students to a wide variety of materials as they practice their skills, and by reinforcing successful generalization.
