Which organelles are involved in membrane flow? Trace the route of a single integral membrane protein from formation to incorporation into the plasma membrane


All membranous organelles are involved in membrane flow. Those most directly associated are the ER, Golgi apparatus, secretory vesicles, and plasma membrane. A membrane protein would be synthesized in the RER, then flow through the cisternae to a transport vesicle. There the protein will be moved to the forming face of the Golgi apparatus, where it will slowly travel upward toward the maturing face, usually becoming modified along the way. Once reaching the maturing face of the Golgi apparatus, the protein would be embedded in the membrane of a secretory vesicle and transported to the plasma membrane. There the vesicle will fuse with the membrane, inserting the protein in the cell membrane.
