Military social workers need to have solid clinical knowledge. They are required to have postgraduate work or to go through military-assisted clinical internships in order to become officers. They need to know how to navigate the complex system of government rules and regulations that accompany military living. They need to be able to understand the unique culture of the military and work within those values and that power structure. They need to know how to engage in ethical social work within the confines of what is in the military's best interest. This is an area in which many social workers will be needed in the future. In fact, the needs of military clients will outstrip the resources of the VA, so more civilian social workers may find opportunities in this field as the years pass as well.
