Explain why modern networks are more susceptible to attacks than mainframe computers of the past.

What will be an ideal response?

The primary reason why modern networks are more susceptible to attacks than old
mainframes is access. In the past, with a mainframe, only a select few had access to the
computer, usually through a hard-wired connection with a dumb terminal. To connect
to the mainframe, one had to be on the physical premises. In today’s modern networks,
we provide access to hundreds of thousands users. For example, a Web server may be
accessible to anyone in the world and from anywhere in the world. Maintaining the
security of such a system is diffi cult when it is so open to use and potential attack.
