1 . Piaget suggested that school-age children (ages 7 to 12) are in the concrete operational stage, characterized by the application of logical processes to concrete problems. Children become less egocentric, have the ability to decenter, attain the concept of reversibility, and can understand conservation tasks. However, during this stage children are still tied to concrete reality and have difficulty with abstract questions.
2 . Information-processing approaches focus on quantitative improvements in memory and in the sophistication of the mental programs that school-age children can use. Memory processes come under increasing control, and metamemory improves cognitive processing and memorization.
3 . According to Vygotsky, children in the school years should have the opportunity to experiment and participate actively with their peers in educational experiences. Vygotsky also noted that the nature of interactions must be structured to fall in each individual’s zone of proximal development.
