Empathic failures to selfobject needs over time results in severe deficits in the self and self-structure. This results in feelings of shame, depression, anxiety, fragmentation, and emptiness. This is the underlying source of pathological narcissism. Feelings of pathological narcissism result in compensatory behaviors to either seek the presence of an idealized other or mirroring selfobject.
