List five traits for which early grain breeders were selecting. Explain why each trait was important

What will be an ideal response?

• Increased plant yield: Seed was saved from plants that were more robust and had greater grain yield.
• Increased seed size: Small seed size can be an advantage in spreading of seed and in reestablishment, but larger seeds are easier to harvest, clean, and grind. Large seeds also produce bigger plants when they are used as seed.
• Nonshattering seed: Shattering is a natural process in which seed falls from a plant soon after ripening. Selection for nonshattering seed would allow for more of the seed to be harvested.
• Naked seed: Newly harvested seed of some grains like barley and oats are normally protected by seed coatings. Selection for seed of grains without coating allows for easier processing.
• Reduced seed toxins: Some seeds contain toxins to prevent consumption by wildlife and also may be toxic to humans. Selection for reduced toxin levels allowed for further utilization by humans.
