An acceptable answer will be able to define what empowerment is and note that it does not mean that power disappear from the scene; a good answer will talk about Sewell and Barker’s studies, while a superior answer will recognize that power is irremediable in organizations and that technologies such as empowerment can intensify its experience, by making the exercise more multi-faceted, in ways that relate to the effects of the Panopticon – where employees are made responsible for their own and colleagues policing. Using what you have read in chapter seven of your textbook, why might people in organizations act in morally and ethically questionable ways? When they do so, who is to blame and who must pay?

What will be an ideal response?

An acceptable answer will link the ethics/power debate. The good student will talk about the ethics of obedience, and the techniques of power. Better answer will also draw upon an understanding of total institutions, negative and positive power. The student should show s/he is grappling with what is meant by ‘right’ and wrong’ – and how it is never easily definable. Moreover, the exemplary student might consider the issues of ethical responsibility and accountability within the domain of determinism and free will – i.e. is an individual responsible and accountable to what his or her organizations ‘makes’ them do, using the case of Eichmann to do so?
