Discuss James Marcia's four identity statuses and provide an example of each status.

What will be an ideal response?

The ideal answer should include:
1. Identity achievement involves exploration and commitment. An example is a student who wants to be a doctor. She has explored (she shadowed a doctor who is a friend of the family, read about medical school, and has gotten deeply involved in volunteering at a local hospital) and committed (she is taking AP biology and applied for a college summer program for pre-health students from high schools).
2. Identity moratorium involves exploration without commitment. An example is a student who has explored several careers by volunteering to be a veterinary assistant, working in a geriatric care facility, and working at his father's business in the summer, but is undecided what to pursue.
3. Identity foreclosure involves commitment without prior exploration. An example is a student who decides she will be a veterinarian because she loves animals and her mother is a veterinarian. Her parents assume she is going to go to veterinary school, and so does she. She has not actively considered any other possibilities.
4. Identity diffusion involves no exploration or commitment. An example is a senior in high school who does not really know what he wants to pursue in terms of an area of study, a trade, or a job. His main interest is playing video games. His parents have asked him to get a job, so he does, but the job has not given him any ideas about a career or college course of study.
