For instance, it might be helpful to explore religious and spiritual issues with African American clients. When working with Latino clients, he indicates that therapists might employ a more formal approach during the early stage of the helping process, followed by a gradual introduction of personalismo, a more personal helping style. Therapists should also assess Latino clients for spiritual and religious issues. For working with Asian American clients, Paniagua (2001) recommends the use of a more formal therapeutic approach. He suggests that therapists provide information about their education to Asian clients, because members of this group place a high value on education.
