What did the collapse of the Chinese and Indian states have in common with the dissolution of the Roman Empire in the West?

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary but correct responses should include: The Old World empires of China, India and the western Roman Empire all had traumatic experiences with the invasions of the Eurasian steppelands and the migrations of Germanic and steppelander peoples. In much of Europe and India, the fifth and sixth centuries were so chaotic that recordkeeping collapsed, and we can no longer reconstruct a complete outline even of the most basic facts of political history. Despite the migrants and invaders that washed over Old World empires in the half millennium or so from about 200 onward, the most remarkable feature of the period is perhaps the durability of old orders. While barbarians defeated empires, they also tended to get conquered in their turn by the cultures of their victims. While continuities existed, the Old World empires were transformed into a world of civilizations.
