Discuss the common social determinants of addiction

What will be an ideal response?

Answer: Answers may vary, but should include a discussion of some of the following. Unstable family relationships and exposure to physical or sexual abuse are key risk factors for addiction. Having a parent or older sibling who abuses alcohol or drugs or engages in criminal behavior also increases an individual's risk for drug abuse and addiction, as does lack of parental attachment, nurturing, or simply supervision. Having friends who abuse drugs can sway even those without other risk factors to experiment with drugs themselves. Overall, growing up in a culture in which drug use is viewed as acceptable greatly increases the risk. Additionally, poverty is widely recognized as a risk factor for drug abuse and addiction.
