What is the purpose of fruit? Why are many fruits edible? Are all fruits edible?
What will be an ideal response?
Flowering plants surround their seeds with a structure called a fruit. Fruits help plants disperse their seeds. When fruits are eaten by birds or mammals, for example, the seeds may pass unharmed through the digestive tract and eventually emerge far from the parent plants. Tasty fruits have evolved in certain plants because they are more likely to be eaten by animals, and so the seeds inside are more likely to be dispersed. Seeds themselves often taste bad, discouraging animals from eating them. Not all fruits have evolved to be tasty, however. Some fruits help plants spread their seeds using other strategies. The burrs that catch on your socks during a hike are also fruits. These hitch a ride until you pull them off and drop them on the ground, where the seeds inside may just grow and take root.
