Explain the five functions of outlining
What will be an ideal response?
First, outlining tests the scope of the speaker's content. Outlining helps a speaker to
see if he or she is trying to cover too much material. Second, outlining tests the logical relation
of parts. Are the main points logically connected? Do the subpoints support and develop the
main points? Third, outlining tests the relevance of supporting ideas. Do the subpoints fit
where they have been placed? Fourth, outlining checks the balance of the speech. Do each of
the main points contain the same approximate number of subpoints? Finally, outlining serves
as delivery notes. You can use your fullsentence outline to create a keyword/speaking outline.
