Answer: To the naked eye, Streptomyces appear fuzzy on nutrient agar plates similar to some fungi. Even under a microscope, the hyphal filaments, appearing as mycelial networks of cells, are similar to the morphology of some fungi. Growth of large molecular weight compounds in the nutrient agar is also common in both groups. Due to differences in the domains of life that Streptomyces and fungi occur, genetic-based 16S rRNA gene sequencing and 18S rRNA gene sequencing would reveal their proper identities. Staining for the presence of peptidoglycan would also indicate the Streptomyces are not eukaryotic.
