Explain the relationship of maternal weight gain to infant birth weight
Normal weight gain and adequate nutrition support the health of the mother and the development of the fetus. Low weight gain in pregnancy is associated with increased risk of delivering a LBW infant; these infants have high mortality rates. Excessive weight gain in pregnancy increases the risk of complications during labor and delivery, as well as postpartum obesity.
