You note mild inflammation and injection (redness around the cornea) of your patient's conjunctiva, with the presence of follicles. This finding most likely indicates

a. allergic conjunctivitis. c. infectious pinguecula.
b. bacterial conjunctivitis. d. viral conjunctivitis.

A
Allergic conjunctivitis is often associated with hay fever. The patient would present with complaints of an itching and burning sensation as well as increased lacrimation. On examination, there is mild inflammation, injection, and follicles of palpebral conjunctiva with scant discharge. In bacterial conjunctivitis there is bilateral injected conjunctiva with purulent, sticky discharge and lid edema. Pinguecula are yellow nodules on the nasal or temporal side of the bulbar conjunctiva adjacent to the cornea from prolonged exposure to sun, wind, and dust. Viral conjunctivitis presents with unilateral injection with moderate pain, no purulent discharge, and increased lacrimation. It is most commonly caused by adenovirus.
