What was the patron-client relationship, and what did it mean to Romans?
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary, but students should demonstrate an understanding of bilateral (two-way) duty that was viewed in terms of contractual commitments, the importance of favors and debt, and the way in which persons who owed services to each other and were bound together in an almost religious union known as a patron-client relationship. This system of reciprocal responsibility knit Roman society together in a way that Greek society was not. As a result, Romans were much less likely to resort to violence against each other when disputes arose. The system also was designed to preserve the position and privileges of the patricians.
