Discuss who is poor in America, in relation to race and ethnicity, rural and urban areas, employment, age, and family status
What will be an ideal response?
Blacks, Native Americans, and Hispanics have poverty rates that are nearly triple that of Whites, however most are not poor. Also, not all poor people are minorities about a third of the poor are Whites. Poor people live in both rural and urban areas, with the highest poverty rates in the rural south compared to about in the urban north. The majority of counties with the highest child poverty rates are in the rural south. A sizeable proportion of American families with one or both parents employed live below the poverty line, and working poor families work more than full time, on average. A sizeable proportion of poor children live in working families. Children have a higher poverty rate than others, with Black and Hispanic children having higher rates than white children, and the elderly have a lower poverty rate. The poverty rate among female headed households is much higher than that of married couple families.
