NAFTA made trade a major tertiary sector component of MexAmerica's economy. Cities on both sides of the Mexican-American border grew as a result. On the Mexican, side multinational firms, who preferred to invest in border locations with accessible transportation routes and located near American markets, dramatically increased the construction and operation of maquiladora plants. By 2000, some 2,600 factories, employing more than half a million employees, were in operation in the six Mexican-American border states.
