How are Vietnamese gangs different from Chinese gangs?
What will be an ideal response?
They are more violent, and are reputed to have greater expertise with firearms. Vietnamese gang members are more likely to be Fresh-Off-the-Boat (FOB); Chinese gang members more likely to be American-born Chinese (ABC). Perhaps as a consequence, Vietnamese, when they are in Chinese gangs, tend to be excluded from the higher status positions. This is similar to the immigrant versus nativist situation of the 19th century Irish. Vietnamese gangs are mainly in California, but also reach into Vietnamese and Chinese communities in other locales. Chinese gangs are more established in New York City, and have evolved into a more entrenched group, with the ability to corrupt, and the ability to conduct a higher level and wider range of criminal activity. BTK, which was a breakoff from the Flying Dragons, is also a New York City group. In New York, the BTK victimized massage parlors, bars, and tong gambling dens, and did so, violently and in broad daylight. The Chinese gangs, which in times past had conducted these same types of crimes, were now paid to protect those establishments. The BTK, not being a part of the Flying Dragons power structure were not restrained from those activities.
