When the authors say that today’s news audiences are both consumers and producers of media, discuss how that occurs, how that differs from the journalism profession of 35 years ago, and what it means to you in the field today.
What will be an ideal response?
With the pervasiveness of social media and applications where anyone can post content to a global, digital audience, the people we want to reach via our messages have the technology to produce and post messages at any time. This is very different from journalism before the era of digital technology which
was entirely one-way. Journalists reported the news as they experienced it and fed it to the public via
fewer media channels. What it means to today’s media professionals is that they need to produce content
that is accurate, relevant, and on-point, not only to reach fragmented, time-pressured audiences but to
break through the clutter and be heard.
