cDNA libraries contain DNA that was produced from mRNA templates using the enzyme
reverse transcriptase. As such, these cDNA libraries are devoid of the introns that would be
spliced out during normal mRNA processing. A genomic library contains DNA fragments
that may include segments of functional genes, including exons, introns, and regulatory DNA
sequences. Genomic libraries are produced by inserting DNA sequences into a suitable
vector. cDNA libraries are useful because gene products can be directly produced from them
using RNA polymerase and the translational machinery of a suitable cell such as E. coli. The
lack of introns means that the gene products will be functional proteins.
