Present a brief summary of tolerance, addiction, dependency, and withdrawal symptoms associated with drinking alcohol
What will be an ideal response?
Addiction refers to a behavioral pattern of drug abuse that is marked by an overwhelming and compulsive desire to obtain and use the drug; even after stopping, the person has a strong tendency to relapse and begin using the drug again. The reason people may relapse after trying to give up their drug use is because of their addiction.
Tolerance means that after a person uses a drug repeatedly over a period of time, the original dose of the drug no longer produces the desired effect, so that a person must take increasingly larger doses of the drug to achieve the same behavioral effect. Becoming tolerant is a sign that a person has developed a drug dependency.
Dependency refers to a change in the nervous system so that a person now needs to take the drug to prevent the occurrence of painful withdrawal symptoms. Addiction and dependency combine to make stopping doubly difficult. Being dependent on a drug typically results in withdrawal symptoms if the person stops using the drug.
Withdrawal symptoms are painful physical and psychological symptoms that occur after a drug-dependent person stops using the drug. Alcohol withdrawal symptoms may include shaking, nausea, anxiety, diarrhea, hallucinations, and disorientation.
