In your own words, explain the difference between sex, sex category, and gender.
What will be an ideal response?
Sex is based on biology and is determined through actual verification (i.e., the presence or absence of genitalia through direct observation or the results of a chromosomal test. Sex category is the presumed or assumed sex of someone that is made in social settings. When we see a person on the street that we place in the sex category of male, it is because we have used other indicators to assume that the physical features he possesses (e.g., a penis) is present, not because we have actually seen it. Gender is the attitude and behaviors (or activities) considered normal and expected for whatever one’s sex category is. It is the expectation (and enactment) of what men and women “are.”
