Discuss the impact of globalization on the world’s poor

What will be an ideal response?

ANS: Possible answer: Some argue that globalization increases inequality, noting that inequality has increased as the world has developed a global economy. The activities of the World Bank have been the focus of criticism, as some have argued that the Bank’s Structural Adjustment Programs, while designed to strengthen the free markets in developing nations, actually weaken the safety net for vulnerable groups in those nations. Others suggest that even though globalization coincides with increased inequality, it results in a “bigger pie” and thus reduces hardship and poverty. (In grading answers, I expect students at a minimum to be aware that increased inequality has accompanied globalization. Then I ask that their arguments be internally consistent. Ideally, they will present at least one of the arguments introduced in this chapter, but their choice will depend on their world view.)
